कभी कार के ओआरवीएम (आउटसाइड रियर व्यू मिरर) में दिखने वाली चीजों पर गौर किया हो तो कुछ अजीब लगा होगा. दरअसल, ज्यादातर कारों के ओआरवीएम में चीजें दूर नजर आती हैं जबकि वह होती पास में हैं. इसे ओआरवीएम पर चेतावनी लिखी है. "दर्पण में वस्तु दिखाई देने की तुलना में अधिक निकट होती है", ये लाइन ओआरवीएम पर लिखी है, जिसका मतलब यही है कि शीशे में दिखने वाली चीजें जितनी दूर हैं, वह उतनी दूर नहीं है बल्कि पास में हैं. चलिए, समझते हैं कि आखिर ऐसा क्यों है.

If you have ever noticed the things seen in the ORVM (Outside Rear View Mirror) of the car, then you must have felt something strange. In fact, the ORVM of most cars makes things appear far away when they should be near. It has written warning on ORVM. "The object in the mirror is nearer than it appears", this line is written on the ORVM, which means that the things seen in the mirror are not that far away but near. Let us understand why this is so.

इसका कारण शीशे के डिजाइन या कहें कि बनावट में छिपा है. ज्यादातर कारों में ओआरवीएम के लिए उत्तल दर्पण का इस्तेमाल है. यह ऐसा शीशा है, जिसकी रिफ्लेक्टिव सरफेस लाइट के सोर्स की तरफ उभरी है. शीशे का वह हिस्सा बाहर की ओर उभरा हुआ है, जहां से लाइट टकराकर वापस लौटती है. लाइट शीशे पर पड़ने के बाद ज्यादा बिखरती है, जिससे शीशा ज्यादा जगह या चीजों को दिखाता है, जो ड्राइविंग करते समय सेफ्टी से जरूरी है. 

The reason for this is hidden in the design or texture of the glass. Convex mirror for ORVM in most cars is used. It is a mirror whose reflective surface is facing towards the source of light. That part of the glass is raised outwards from where the light collides and returns back. Light scatters more after falling on the mirror, due to which the mirror shows more space or things, which is important for safety while driving.

हालांकि, नुकसान यही है कि इस प्रोसेस में चीजें छोटी नजर है. उत्तल दर्पण में चीजों के छोटा दिखने को 'मिनिफिकेशन' हैं. जितना ज्यादा कर्व्ड मिरर होगा, उतना ज्यादा 'मिनिफिकेशन' होगा. अब यही 'मिनिफिकेशन' इफेक्ट ओआरवीएम में चीजों को छोटा करता है और क्योंकि दिमांग छोटी चीजों को दूर के साथ जोड़ने का आदी है इसीलिए ओआरवीएम वाली छोटी चीजें हमें दूर महसूस हैं.

However, the disadvantage is that things are short sighted in this process. The minimization of objects in a convex mirror is 'minification'. The more curved the mirror, the greater the 'minification'. Now this 'minification' effect makes things small in the ORVM and because the mind is used to associating small things with distance, that's why small things in the ORVM seem distant to us.
