Nehru, the first Prime Minister, was born on November 14, 1889, in a family of Kashmiri Brahmins. The family, noted for administrative ability and scholarship, had moved to Delhi in the early 18th century. He was the son of famous lawyer and leader of the Indian independence movement Motilal Nehru, who became one of Mahatma Gandhi's major associates. Jawaharlal was the eldest of four children, two of whom were girls. A sister, Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit, later became the first woman president of the United Nations General Assembly.

It is believed that Nehru was known by children as "Uncle Nehru" because children are the strength of India. As another story, the former prime minister was called "Uncle" because of his proximity to Gandhi, who was called 'Bapu'. People suggested the nickname 'Chacha' for Jawaharlal Nehru as he was seen as the younger brother of the Father of the Nation.
