Teacher's Day was celebrated on the birthday of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. In 1962, when the President of India assumed office, the students went for permission to celebrate 5 September as a special day.

शिक्षक दिवस एक ऐसा आयोजन है जिसके लिए छात्र और शिक्षक समान रूप से तत्पर रहते हैं। यह दिन छात्रों के लिए महत्वपूर्ण है क्योंकि यह उन्हें अपने शिक्षकों द्वारा उचित शिक्षा सुनिश्चित करने के लिए किए गए प्रयासों को समझने का मौका देता है। इसी तरह, शिक्षक भी शिक्षक दिवस समारोह के लिए तत्पर हैं क्योंकि उनके प्रयासों को छात्रों और अन्य एजेंसियों द्वारा भी मान्यता और सम्मानित किया जाता है।
Teachers Day is one such event to which students and teachers equally look forward. The Day is important for the students as it gives them a chance to understand the efforts put in by their teachers to ensure that they get a proper education. Similarly, teachers also look forward to the Teachers’ Day celebration as their efforts get recognised and honoured by students and other agencies as well.

(Why is Teachers Day Celebrated)?
डॉ. राधाकृष्णन 1962 में भारत के राष्ट्रपति बने। डॉ. एस. राधाकृष्णन ने जवाब दिया, "मेरे जन्मदिन को ध्यान से देखने के बजाय, अगर 5 सितंबर को शिक्षक दिवस के रूप में मनाया जाता है, तो यह मेरे लिए गर्व की बात होगी।" तब से, भारत 5 सितंबर को शिक्षक दिवस मनाता है
Dr. Radhakrishnan became President of India in 1962. Dr. S. Radhakrishnan responded, "Instead of observing my birthday discretely, it would be my pompous privilege if 5th September is scrutinised as Teachers' Day". From then onwards, India celebrates Teachers' Day on 5th September.
